Common questions, answered from official sources
What is GST and where is it published?
GST (Goods and Services Tax) is India's indirect tax on the supply of goods and services. It replaced central excise duty, service tax and most state VAT. It is administered by the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), while rates and exemptions are set by the GST Council and published in CBIC notifications and Council resolutions. Income tax is administered separately by the CBDT.
Where do I find NSE/BSE company announcements?
Listed-company announcements are published on the exchange filing portals of NSE (nseindia.com) and BSE (bseindia.com): quarterly results, board resolutions, shareholding changes, corporate actions and IPO documents. SEBI orders and surveillance notices appear on sebi.gov.in, and the statutory company master record is held by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (mca.gov.in).
How do I look up an HS code and import duty?
HS classification and customs duty are published by the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs. Use the ICEGATE portal to look up an HS code and the applicable basic customs duty, and read CBIC tariff notifications for rate changes. Export-import policy and licensing come from DGFT and the Indian Trade Portal.
How do I verify an Indian company?
Verify a company on the Ministry of Corporate Affairs master data, which lists the CIN or LLPIN, directors and the filing history, then confirm its GST registration on the GST portal. MSME registration can be checked separately on the Udyam portal.
Where can I get India GDP and population data?
National statistics come from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) for GDP, CPI and IIP, and from the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner for population. Machine-readable access is through the Open Government Data platform and the DBIE API.
